Tall orange dunes of Erg Chebbi, the key difference in Merzouga vs Zagora

Merzouga vs Zagora: Which Morocco Desert Should You Choose?

In the Merzouga vs Zagora debate, choose Merzouga if you want real, tall Sahara dunes: the Erg Chebbi sea of sand rises to around 150 m and needs a 3-day trip from Marrakech. Choose Zagora only if you have two days; it is closer, but its dunes are small and the landscape is mostly stony desert.

  • Merzouga: about 560 km from Marrakech, 9–10 hours of driving split over two days.
  • Zagora: about 360 km from Marrakech, roughly 7 hours one way.
  • Dunes: Erg Chebbi (Merzouga) is a large erg with high dunes; Zagora has a few small dunes near Tinfou.
  • Days needed: Merzouga 3 days minimum; Zagora 2 days.
  • Our price: 3-day Merzouga tour from MAD 1,200 per person (about €110), standard camp.

Almost everyone who plans a desert trip from Marrakech hits the same question: Merzouga or Zagora? Street agencies in the medina often push Zagora because it is shorter and cheaper to run. As a Marrakech operator that runs desert trips every week, we give you the honest comparison — and explain why our best-selling 3-day Marrakech to Merzouga desert tour goes to Erg Chebbi rather than Zagora.

What is Merzouga like?

Merzouga is a small village on the western edge of Erg Chebbi, a field of wind-sculpted dunes more than 20 km long from north to south, close to the Algerian border. It is the image most people have in mind when they picture the Sahara: smooth ridges of orange sand that change colour through the day, silence at night and a sky full of stars.

On our tour you arrive in the late afternoon, ride a camel for about an hour into the dunes for sunset, and spend the night at a desert camp with dinner and Berber music. Next morning you climb a dune for sunrise before riding back. Quad bikes, sandboarding and visits to Khamlia, known for its Gnawa music, are optional extras.

The journey is part of the trip

The extra distance to Merzouga is not empty road. The classic route crosses the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, stops at UNESCO-listed Aït Benhaddou, spends a night in the Dades Valley and walks through the Todra Gorge. Read our full Marrakech to Merzouga guide for the stop-by-stop route.

What is Zagora like?

Zagora is a market town in the Draa Valley, south-east of Ouarzazate, famous for its long string of palm groves and kasbahs and the old painted sign announcing "52 days to Timbuktu" by camel caravan. The drive down the Draa Valley is genuinely beautiful, especially through the Agdz area.

The desert near Zagora, however, is mostly hamada — flat, stony ground — with a few modest dunes such as those near Tinfou. Camps are pleasant, and the camel ride is fine as a first taste, but if you are expecting the tall sand dunes from photos of the Sahara, Zagora usually disappoints.

What about Erg Chigaga?

Further south, beyond M'Hamid, lies Erg Chigaga, a large and remote dune field. It is impressive, but it requires a 4x4 journey of a couple of hours off-road from M'Hamid, which makes it a longer and more expensive trip than Merzouga. For most travellers with three or four days, Merzouga offers big dunes with far simpler logistics.

How many days do you need for each desert?

  • Zagora — 2 days, 1 night: a long first day from Marrakech, one camp night, and a long drive back. Very little time is spent in the desert itself.
  • Merzouga — 3 days, 2 nights: the most popular option. Night one in the Dades Valley, night two in an Erg Chebbi camp.
  • Merzouga — 4 days, 3 nights: a more relaxed pace with extra time in the gorges or a second desert night; see our 4-day Sahara tour from Marrakech.
  • Marrakech to Fes via Merzouga — 3 days: ideal if you are continuing north rather than returning; see the Marrakech to Fes desert tour (from MAD 1,800).

Is Zagora worth it if I only have two days?

If two days is genuinely all you have and you want a night in a desert camp, Zagora is a reasonable choice — just set your expectations: think palm groves, kasbahs and a starry sky rather than towering dunes. If what you want is simply a desert atmosphere close to Marrakech, there is an even easier option: the stony Agafay desert, about 40 minutes from the city. Our Agafay sunset camel ride and dinner fits into a single afternoon and evening without the long drive.

Why we recommend Merzouga

When guests ask us to choose between Merzouga vs Zagora, we almost always suggest Merzouga, for three reasons:

  1. Real dunes. Erg Chebbi is one of the most accessible true sand seas in Morocco. The sunset and sunrise views from the ridges are the reason most people want to visit the Sahara in the first place.
  2. Better use of time. On the 2-day Zagora trip you spend around 14 hours in the vehicle for one evening in the desert. The 3-day Merzouga trip adds one day but includes the Dades Valley and Todra Gorge, so the driving is broken up by real sights.
  3. Flexibility. From Merzouga you can return to Marrakech or finish in Fes, which suits travellers doing a loop of Morocco.

Tripadvisor guests have rated our 3-day Merzouga tour 4.9 out of 5 across 28 reviews, and many mention the dunes and the camp night as the highlight of their whole Morocco trip.

Merzouga or Zagora: which suits your travel style?

Beyond dunes and distance, the right answer to Merzouga vs Zagora depends on who is travelling and what else is on your list.

Choose Merzouga if…

  • The Sahara is a once-in-a-lifetime highlight and you want the classic dune photos at sunset and sunrise.
  • You have at least three days, or you are travelling on to Fes and the north.
  • You want to see the gorges and valleys of southern Morocco along the way, not just the desert.
  • You would like the option of a luxury camp; our luxury 3-day Sahara tour starts from MAD 2,500 with private bathroom tents.

Choose Zagora if…

  • You only have two days and a night in a desert camp matters more than the dunes themselves.
  • You are mainly interested in kasbahs, palm groves and the Draa Valley landscape.
  • You have already seen large dunes elsewhere and want a different side of southern Morocco.

Travelling with children or older travellers

Families sometimes assume the shorter Zagora trip will be easier, but in practice the long single days of driving are harder on children than the 3-day Merzouga route, where each day has several stops of an hour or so. Our drivers adapt the pace, plan regular breaks, and if anyone prefers not to ride a camel, ask us whether a 4x4 transfer to camp can be arranged for your dates.

When is the best time to visit Merzouga or Zagora?

Both deserts are most pleasant from October to April, with spring and autumn being the sweet spot. Summer days are extremely hot in both places, while winter nights can be near freezing. For month-by-month detail, see our guide to the best time to visit the Sahara. For background on the wider Sahara, the Erg Chebbi entry on Wikipedia and the Moroccan National Tourist Office are useful starting points.
