Merzouga vs Zagora: Which Morocco Desert Should You Choose?
Merzouga or Zagora? We compare dunes, driving distance from Marrakech and days needed, and explain why we recommend Merzouga for real Sahara dunes.

4 days / 3 nights · From Marrakech (hotel/riad pickup)
A slower 4 day desert tour from Marrakech with two nights in Merzouga and a full day to explore: Gnawa music in Khamlia, Rissani market and optional quad biking on the dunes.

This 4 day desert tour from Marrakech is for travellers who want more than one night in the Sahara: you spend two nights in Merzouga with a full day to explore Khamlia's Gnawa music, Rissani market and the Erg Chebbi dunes, plus Aït Benhaddou, Dades and Todra on the way. Private or shared, price on request.
On a three-day trip you reach the dunes in the late afternoon and leave after sunrise. With four days the desert becomes a destination rather than a stop: you wake up in Merzouga with a whole day ahead, and the drive back is split differently so it feels less rushed. If you are short on time, our 3-day Marrakech to Merzouga desert tour covers the same highlights in one day less.

Khamlia is a small village near the dunes known for Gnawa music, a spiritual tradition with roots in sub-Saharan Africa; you can sit with the musicians over tea. Rissani, a historic market town, is a good place to see daily local trade. In the afternoon you can rest, walk the dunes, or add a quad bike ride as an optional extra.

We pick you up from your hotel or riad in Marrakech early on day one and drop you back on the evening of day four. Pack layers: desert nights can be cold, especially from November to February. Our desert packing guide has a full checklist, and the Aït Benhaddou guide tells you what to look out for at the ksar.
The tour can be booked with a standard Berber camp, with shared facilities and a friendly atmosphere around the fire, or upgraded to a luxury camp with private en-suite tents. On private departures we can also adjust the order of visits, add a longer stop in the Dades Valley or plan the return through different villages. Tell us what matters most to you and we will shape the four days around it.
It suits photographers, families who prefer shorter driving days, and anyone who wants to experience the desert at a gentler pace. If you are heading north afterwards, consider the Marrakech to Fes desert tour instead.
