23 Best Things to Do in Marrakech: A Local's Guide
Our local list of 23 things to do in Marrakech: medina sights, gardens, hammams, sunrise balloon flights, cooking classes, camel rides and desert…

About 2–3 hours (plus transfers) · From Marrakech (hotel/riad pickup)
Learn to weave alongside local women artisans: a hands-on Berber rug workshop in Marrakech covering natural dyes, traditional symbols and loom techniques, with mint tea and hotel or riad pickup.

Our Berber rug workshop Marrakech experience is for curious travellers who want to create, not just shop. You get hotel or riad pickup and around two to three hours with local women artisans, learning how wool is dyed with natural colours, what the traditional symbols mean and how to knot and weave on a real loom.
Amazigh (Berber) rugs are one of Morocco's best-known crafts. Each design carries meaning, and the skills are passed down from mother to daughter in villages across the Atlas. Walking through the souks you see thousands of rugs; in this workshop you learn how one is actually made, from raw wool to knot, and you meet the women whose hands do the work.

See how sheep's wool is cleaned, carded and spun, and how traditional dyes are made from plants and minerals such as henna, indigo, saffron and pomegranate. You can try mixing and dyeing a small skein.
The artisans explain common motifs, from diamonds and zigzags to signs linked to fertility, protection and the natural world, and how different regions developed their own styles.
Sit at the loom with an artisan beside you to learn the basic knot and weaving technique. It is slower than it looks, which is exactly why it gives you a new respect for a finished rug.
The workshop ends with mint tea and time to ask questions about life, craft and tradition. There is no obligation to buy anything.
Pair the workshop with our Moroccan cooking class in Marrakech for a full day of local culture, and see our guide to things to do in Marrakech for more ideas. On a longer trip, our 3-day Marrakech to Merzouga desert tour passes through the Amazigh villages and kasbahs where many weaving traditions began.
Creative travellers, design and textile lovers, families with older children, and anyone who wants a meaningful, hands-on cultural experience. It is also an ideal activity for a hot afternoon or a rainy day in Marrakech.
