From the Atlantic to the Sahara and on to Marrakech

Many flights arrive in Casablanca, but the desert is far to the south-east. This one-way route turns the journey into part of the trip: you cross the Middle Atlas, sleep in the dunes and end in Marrakech without backtracking. If you are already in Marrakech, our 3-day Marrakech to Merzouga desert tour is shorter and simpler.

Highlights along the way

  • Rabat: Morocco's capital, with the Hassan Tower and the Mohammed V Mausoleum.
  • Ifrane and the Middle Atlas: cedar forests and a cool mountain climate.
  • Merzouga: camel ride into the Erg Chebbi dunes and a night in a desert camp.
  • Todra and Dades: dramatic gorges and kasbah-lined valleys.
  • Aït Benhaddou: the UNESCO-listed ksar, before crossing the Tizi n'Tichka pass to Marrakech.

Practical information

Casablanca to Merzouga is a long journey, so the first two days involve plenty of driving, broken up by visits and stops. Desert nights can be cold in winter, so bring a warm layer. Our guide to the best time to visit the Sahara explains the seasons, and our 7-day Morocco itinerary from Casablanca shows how to extend the trip.

Day by day at a glance

  • Day 1: Casablanca to Rabat for the Hassan Tower, then inland via Ifrane to Midelt.
  • Day 2: Midelt through the Ziz Valley to Merzouga, sunset camel ride and desert camp.
  • Day 3: Sahara sunrise, Todra Gorge and the Dades Valley.
  • Day 4: Aït Benhaddou and the Tizi n'Tichka pass to Marrakech.

Bring your full luggage: it stays in the vehicle, and you only need a small overnight bag for the camp. On a private departure we can adjust the pace, add time in Rabat or plan a longer stop at Aït Benhaddou.
