Marrakech Balloon Ride Guide: Sunrise Times, Season & Tips

A hot air balloon Marrakech flight takes off at sunrise from the countryside outside the city and lasts about one hour in the air. Expect a pre-dawn hotel pick-up, views over Berber villages, palm groves and the Atlas Mountains, a gentle landing and a traditional breakfast, with the whole experience taking around four to five hours.

  • Flight time: about 45–60 minutes in the air
  • Total experience: roughly 4–5 hours, including transfers and breakfast
  • Pick-up: usually between about 5:00 and 6:30, depending on the season
  • Flights run: all year, weather permitting
  • Best conditions: calm, clear mornings, most reliable from October to April
  • Price: varies by season and basket type; ask us on WhatsApp for today's price

Floating silently over the plains at dawn while the snow-capped High Atlas turns pink is one of the most memorable things you can do in Morocco. A hot air balloon Marrakech flight is also one of the activities our guests ask about most, often with the same questions: how early is the start, is it safe, and what if the weather is bad? This guide answers them all, based on the flights we arrange for our guests. When you are ready to book, everything is on our hot air balloon flight in Marrakech page.

Planning a longer trip? Many guests combine a balloon flight with a few days in the Sahara on our 3-day Marrakech to Merzouga desert tour, so they see Morocco from the sky and from the top of a dune.

How does a hot air balloon flight in Marrakech work?

Balloon flights do not take off from the city itself. The launch sites are in open countryside a short drive from Marrakech, where there is space to inflate the balloon and land safely. The exact location changes with the wind on the day, which the pilot checks before departure.

A hot air balloon is beautifully simple: burners heat the air inside the envelope, the warm air makes it lighter than the surrounding air, and the balloon rises. The pilot controls altitude by adding heat or letting air cool. There is no steering in the usual sense; instead, the pilot uses winds that blow in different directions at different heights. If you are curious about the physics, the Wikipedia article on hot air balloons explains it well.

Sunrise timing: why the early start?

Balloons fly at dawn because the air is at its calmest and most stable just after sunrise. As the sun warms the ground during the morning, thermals and stronger winds develop, making flying less predictable. That is why every reputable operator flies early.

What to expect on the day

  1. Pick-up: a driver collects you from your hotel or from a meeting point near your riad if vehicles cannot reach it in the medina.
  2. Drive to the launch site: usually around 30–45 minutes into the countryside. Tea or coffee and a light snack are often served while the crew works.
  3. Inflation: you watch the crew lay out the envelope and fill it with air, first with fans and then with the burners. It is a spectacular sight in the half-light.
  4. Safety briefing: the pilot explains how to stand in the basket, what to hold and the landing position.
  5. The flight: around 45–60 minutes. You may skim low over olive groves and villages, then climb high for wide views towards the High Atlas and the Jbilet hills.
  6. Landing: usually gentle, sometimes with a bump or a short slide in open fields. Follow the pilot's instructions and keep knees slightly bent.
  7. Breakfast: a traditional Berber breakfast with bread, honey, olive oil, amlou and mint tea, often in a tent or a village house.
  8. Return: back in Marrakech by late morning, with the rest of the day free.

How high does the balloon fly?

Altitude varies throughout the flight. Pilots often fly low over the fields to show you village life, then climb to several hundred metres or more for the panorama. It feels surprisingly calm, because you travel with the wind and barely feel a breeze in the basket.

Is it cold up there?

At dawn the air is cool, especially from November to March. The burners give out heat above your head, but you will still want a warm layer. In summer, mornings are pleasant and you will warm up quickly after landing.

Is a hot air balloon in Marrakech safe?

Hot air ballooning has a good safety record when it is run by trained, licensed pilots with well-maintained equipment and a strict approach to weather. Our advice for choosing any operator:

  • Ask about the pilots: they should be licensed and experienced.
  • Ask about cancellations: a serious operator will cancel or postpone in unsuitable weather, without pressure to fly.
  • Check insurance: make sure passengers are covered, and check your own travel insurance for adventure activities.
  • Listen to the briefing: the landing position matters, and following the pilot's instructions is the most important thing you can do.

For general safety information about travelling in Morocco, see the UK government's travel advice for Morocco.

Who should not fly?

Ballooning is suitable for most people, but it is generally not recommended during pregnancy, after recent surgery, or for anyone with serious back, heart or mobility problems, as you must stand for the whole flight and brace for landing. Minimum ages for children vary by operator, so tell us the ages of your group when you enquire. Passengers need to be able to climb into a basket with some help.

What happens if the weather is bad?

The final decision is made early on the morning of the flight. If wind, rain or low visibility make flying unsafe, the flight is cancelled and you are usually offered another date or a refund according to the booking terms. For this reason, we recommend booking your balloon flight early in your stay, so there is time to reschedule.

What is the best season for a hot air balloon Marrakech flight?

Balloons fly over Marrakech all year round, but each season has its own character:

  • October to April: our favourite period. Mornings are cool and clear, and from roughly December to April the Atlas peaks are often snow-capped, making the views spectacular.
  • May and September: comfortable temperatures and generally good flying conditions.
  • June to August: very early starts and pleasant mornings, though the air can be hazier, so the mountains are sometimes less visible.

For how the seasons affect the rest of your trip, including the desert, see our guide to the best time to visit the Sahara.

What to wear and bring

  • Warm layers you can remove: a fleece or jacket, especially in winter
  • Comfortable closed shoes, as landing fields can be dusty or uneven
  • A hat or cap that will not blow away; avoid loose scarves near the burners
  • Camera or phone with a wrist strap, fully charged
  • A small amount of cash for tips or souvenirs

Leave large bags at your hotel; there is very little space in the basket.

Shared or private basket?

Most flights are in shared baskets, which carry several passengers in separate compartments. For a proposal, an anniversary or simply more space, a private basket for your group is often available. Both options can be arranged; message us and we will check availability and today's price for your date.

After your flight, you have the whole day ahead. For ideas, browse our list of things to do in Marrakech, or continue the adventure at ground level with a camel ride in the Palmeraie. The official Visit Morocco website has more inspiration for the region.
